ISO 45001: 2018 - Occupational health and safety management systems

Introduction to ISO 45001: 2018 certification

The company compliance with 45001:2018 should be a planned decision of any organization; the design and implementation and the time required basically depend on various factors.

Thanks to the Occupational Health and Safety Management System based on ISO 45001, the company will be able to identify, analyze and evaluate risks affecting personnel, in order to adopt appropriate measures that will improve the working environment .

The organization's human capital is its main resource, so the health and well-being of employees, regardless of business and size, are some of the main keys to business success. Both accidents and stressful situations have a negative impact on company performance, both from a production point of view (leaves and absenteeism) and from a reputational point of view. For these reasons, the organization must provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, proactively anticipating the possible occurrence of accidents and preventing damage or injury.

Benefits of ISO 45001: 2018

ISO 45001 and the new international standard that replaced OHSAS 18001 have many similarities with the latter, the new ISO 45001 standard adopts the structure of Annex SL, the standard that defines the new high-level structure for all system standards ISO management and allows you to:

  1. protect and reduce the risks for its employees and other subjects that fall under its control;
  2. comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements;
  3. promote a continuous improvement of their safety performance at work by applying the Roadmap for ISO 45001: 2018 certification which allows, among others:
  4. Identify the GAP analysis.
  5. Minimize critical issues related to workplace safety
  6. save on costs, reducing direct and indirect costs due to accidents, illnesses and more
  7. increase productivity by reducing downtime caused by employee illness or injury
  8. obtain a competitive advantage, demonstrating to all stakeholders the company's compliance with OH & S requirements through certification issued by an independent third party
  9. improve transparency, through greater knowledge of the safety processes in the organization

The Importance of Continuing Certification

The advantage of ISO 45001:2018 derives from the effective and continuous implementation of the system, the certification based on sampling may not be a guarantee of absolute implementation; therefore, it is necessary for the Organization that intends to be certified to guarantee effective implementation and control before planning the evaluation. The auditors choose the sample to verify the effectiveness of the management system. It is possible that the sample taken is considered correct and certification is issued, but the problem may persist within the organization. Please remember that the Certification is issued with the obligation/commitment on the part of the Organization to satisfy the requirement of the standard.

ISO 45001: 2018 Certification Process

The ISO 45001:2018 certification process requires an initial audit consisting of two phases, in phase 1 the documentation of your organization is verified while in phase 2 the implementation of the audit of the documented management system is verified. During the audit, if the audit team identifies any findings, the client will need to address them before making the Certification decision. Subsequently, at least 1 audit per year must be conducted to verify continuous compliance with the requirements of the management system standard.

What is the cost of an Audit to obtain Certification

Certification costs can depend on size, location, complexity of the operation, processes and inter-relevance. CB Cert Doo produces an indicative price list based on the nature and size of the company.

There are mainly three types of fees applicable for ISO certification services:

  • Audit fees: variable based on man days;
